The area of networking research has undergone a broadening of its intellectual goals, branching out from the original protocols work to include networks of many kinds such as social networks. In analogy, the area of collaborative computing is contemplating similar opportunities to broaden its intellectual reach. These opportunities arise from both technology push and application pull. An example of technology push is the emergence of cyber physical systems (CPS) from the next generation sensors in the front end, the growth of computational clouds in the back end, and the continuous advances in networking bandwidth availability that links the two ends. CPS applications such as personalized health care, integrated and intelligent transportation, and efficient emergency response, all require capabilities that depend on significant research advances. The continued growth of social networks such as MySpace and Facebook also show the new value added by collaboration.
The panel will discuss the growing research opportunities in collaborative computing, some arising from the application of successful collaborative technologies, and others created by new programs from various funding agencies.
Panelists:Panelists will give a short (10-15min) interactive introduction, followed by discussions.
