Prof. Henry Wang

Title: Converged technology for intelligent airport services

Prof. Henry Wang received his Bachelor and Master degrees in electrical engineering from the best electrical department in China, Xi’an Jiaotong University, in 1991 and 1994, respectively, and his PhD degree from Brunel University in the UK in 2001. He is currently a Professor in Computing and also the Coordinator of Research and Enterprise in School of Computing and Engineering at University of West London. He is a senior member of IEEE, an expert reviewer of EU proposals and a member of EPSRC Peer Review College.

Prof. Wang has broad research experience in asset condition monitoring, mobile healthcare, wireless mesh and sensor networks, indoor localisation and navigation, IoT, big data analytics for airport services and also application of advanced networking and communication technologies for disaster management. Currently he is working with an industrial partner to develop the world first smart trolley used for intelligent airport services, which is being commercially deployed at more than 10 airports.

Driven by tougher security requirement, expectations of better user experience, and generation of non-aeronautical income, a large number of advanced devices and applications were implemented at airport over the last few years, such as self check-in kiosks, security screening devices, and smartphone applications. In this presentation, demonstrated by a real-life application example, a converged solution based on the rigid need of airport services and advanced technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), indoor localisation and navigation, big data analytics, and cloud computing, is presented to improve passenger experience at airports. Further research topics are also envisioned in this talk.
